The film presents a true story that took place in 1862. It was at that time that the American Civil War was taking place. The 54th Regiment became the very first unit of the US Army, which consisted only of black people, except for the officers themselves. It was created in 1862, and it was headed by a young colonel Robert Geldom Shaw, who was sure that slaves were no worse soldiers than all others, even though most of them received weapons for the first time only in the Massachusetts Regiment.

The American Civil War solved two important questions for many citizens: whether America would remain a united country and whether slavery could be rooted out once and for all. Naturally, the freed slaves wanted to participate independently in solving this issue not only with words, but also with force. It is for this reason that the army of the Northerners agreed to form the 54th regiment. When Robert Shaw gave his consent to lead the regiment, he did not even expect the consequences that he later faced. After all, the whole point was not the competence of the leader himself or that it was difficult to train people. The most difficult thing in this process was that the Southerners declared their intention to brutally kill the commanders of the "black" platoons for their work with Blacks.
