You are Charles Reed, a private detective from Boston, a World War I veteran suffering from a strange mental illness. Charles was treated in a madhouse, but it looked more like elegant torture: after learning that he was afraid of the dark, the doctors locked the patient in a room without light, and realizing that the water was causing the hero to panic, they wrapped him in wet rags. By some miracle, Charles managed to keep some common sense and get to work. Here, an unusual gift came in handy, which, along with creepy visions, woke up in him after the war - rod knows how to look into the very essence of things with the help of a "third eye" and thus see pictures of the past and hidden marks left by unknown people.

Trying to figure out the nature of his visions, he comes across reports of outbreaks of similar hysteria in Oakmont, Massachusetts - in fact, he is invited there by a mysterious specialist, Johannes van der Berg. Arriving at the port, the hero learns that the city has suffered greatly from Flooding: part of the streets were flooded along with houses, and terrible creatures escaped from the depths of the sea. The city is somehow held in the hands of influential families - the Throgmortons and Carpenters - but after the disaster, the locals, who had been unsociable before, became suspicious of any invaders. Under such conditions, the Family begins an investigation, which subsequently brings frightening results.

The story of "The Sinking City" can be divided into plot and secondary quests, but only conditionally - often information obtained during the investigation of additional cases clarifies what is happening in the main ones. The plot is definitely the strongest side of the game. The authors plunged headlong into the myths of Cthulhu and pulled out everything possible from there: you will find references to all the main deities of the unholy pantheon, you will be able to find characters like Eldernon Blackwood or groups like the "Yellow Kings", you will see an ape-man, as if he had just crawled out of a Mammoth cave, stop supporters of Shub-Niggurat and others, no less famous creatures.

The dialogues are also pleasantly striking: against the background of the general reduction of the "conversational" part of the games (hello, Fallout), the full-fledged communication of the characters of "The Sinking City" looks like a ray in a dark abyss.

However, it was not without problems. The variability of the passage, presented in the form of a choice of interpretation of the collected evidence (about them below) and, accordingly, the interpretation of ambiguous events, gives the player the opportunity to choose one of the possible ways to solve a particular problem. But it doesn't affect anything. When choosing between the death of an innocent family being held hostage and the possibility of framing a villainous official, you must understand that this is only about your perception of the whole story: neither the reward nor the subsequent plot will be affected by your choice. The maximum changes that the game offers are the replacement of one character in the story dialogue in a further mission with another, in accordance with the one you left alive earlier, but the role of both characters does not change from this. You can behave like a complete scumbag or, conversely, play a noble knight, but for the residents you will still remain an alien, and none of your actions will improve the condition of the flooded city.
